This 2-day sample itinerary in Makino, Takashima-City, Shiga Prefecture, offers a delightful blend of nature, local cuisine, and community interaction. At Makino Pick Land, you enjoy harvesting seasonal fruits and a lunch made from local ingredients. At the farmhouse inn “Taraichi-tei Guest House,” experience tofu-making and savor a homemade dinner while immersing yourself in the daily rhythms of rural life. On the second day, enjoy a sake-tasting experience at the historic Yoshida Sake Brewery, have lunch at the popular Japanese restaurant “Totoro,” and finally, stroll through the scenic streets of the lakeside town of Kaizu. Surrounded by Lake Biwa and the Hira Mountains, this journey offers a soothing escape with warm encounters and leisurely moments.
Arrival: JR Makino Station & Lunch
From Kyoto Station via the JR Kosei Line, it takes about 60 minutes to reach JR Makino Station. The station is easily accessible from Osaka and Tsuruga, making it the perfect starting point for a journey through the nature and history of Makino, Takashima-City. You can rent a bicycle at the JR Makino Station Tourist Information Center / Makino Tourism Office to get around.
After your arrival, head to ”Makino Pick Land”. At the on-site restaurant, you can enjoy warm, comforting dishes made with locally sourced seasonal ingredients, showcasing the blessings of the Satoyama countryside. Relax and savor the flavors while experiencing the food culture of Makino.
Afternoon: Fruit Harvest Experience at Makino Pick Land
At Makino Pick Land, surrounded by seasonal orchards, enjoy picking harvesting fresh produce with your own hands. Depending on the season, you can harvest blueberries, grapes, chestnuts, sweet potatoes, and more. This hands-on activity is a favorite among families and first-time visitors alike.

After fruit harvesting, head to the peaceful farmhouse inn “Taraichi-tei Guest House.” Welcomed with warm hospitality from the host, and you can enjoy a homemade dinner featuring seasonal vegetables and local ingredients while experiencing the lifestyle and culture of Shiga.
Hands-on programs such as tofu-making let you experience local traditions with all your senses. Only one group is accommodated per night, ensuring a private and relaxing stay.
Morning: Breakfast & Check-Out
Start the day wrapped in the tranquility of the Satoyama countryside. Breakfast at Taraichi-tei Guest House features delicate flavors made with Shiga’s seasonal vegetables and local ingredients. After breakfast, take a leisurely walk in nature or enjoy the tofu you made the previous day. After checking out, head to Yoshida Sake Brewery to discover the charm of local sake.
Workshop (10:00 am): Sake-Tasting Experience at Yoshida Sake Brewery
At the long-established Yoshida Sake Brewery in operation since the Meiji Era discover the depth of Shiga’s sake crafted from local water and rice. Taste sake brewed using traditional methods and locally sourced rice. Famous for its “Chikubushima” brand, the brewery also offers insight into the brewers’ passion and philosophy. Even beginners can enjoy this cultural and flavorful experience.
Lunch (12:00 pm): Japanese Restaurant “Totoro”
Enjoy a lunch featuring Shiga’s seasonal ingredients at “Totoro,” a beloved local restaurant. Depending on the season, the set meals include fresh seafood from Lake Biwa and the Sea of Japan. Take a relaxing break in a cozy setting and savor the flavors of the Satoyama region.
Afternoon & Conclusion (1:30 pm): Stroll through Kaizu
Spend a leisurely afternoon exploring the historic lakeside town of Kaizu. Once a key hub for lake transportation, the town still preserves impressive stone walls reminiscent of castle fortifications, evoking a timeless atmosphere. Enjoy views along Lake Biwa, seasonal flowers, and a glimpse into the culture and daily life of the local community. Conclude your trip by returning to JR Makino Station, with convenient access toKyoto and Osaka via the JR Kosei Line.
